Introduce the children about photography learning and hone their confidence to tell stories through their eyes, get input and evaluation that can motivate changes in daily behaviour. This project is also an opportunity to be able to explore villages, explore local potential, including identifying problems that need immediate treatment.
Nevertheless, it is sometimes a difficult process to define what the real problems are, to decide what should be prioritised, and to find the most effective method to solve the issues. The Foundation initiates a photography project, through which we attempt to do the process in a creative way by engaging local children and understanding their problems through their perspective.
When we visited Sumba, we met children who were cheerful and happy, even though they lived in villages that were not electrified, far from school, and far from access to health facilities. We can learn and listen from the perspective of children in telling stories through photos of their lives in their villages. Children have innocent and spontaneous characters, so we can get honest and unique stories of their own environmental conditions.
Sumba Photo Project will be one of our brainchildren. In this project, we will teach local children about photography, including how to use a camera, take photos with good angle and composition, and subsequently making good stories out of their photos.
We will lend them cameras and let them take pictures of anything in their surroundings as we continue to hone their photography skills through a series of training. The photos will capture real problems in their environment, which are interpreted through the children’s genuine point of view.
