A storm and no more school for these 60 kids! Help us to rebuild their School here Kawan’s!

Help 65 children from 8 to 10 years old, to go back to school!

The 20 December 2019, the school of Mbinundita composed of two classrooms collapsed because of a storm. By reconstructing a new school, the Foundation offers the continuity of educational activity in Mbinundita. Consequently, these 60++ children aged 8 to 10 years old can return to school. This village is located about 2.5 hours by car from the bigger city of Sumba. This population is far from any form of civilisation. It is essential for them that the school can be rebuilt as soon as possible!

Dear friends, dear Kawan, dear families, how are you? Hope this campaign will find you well and happy!

Covid-19 Outbreak | This epidemic prevents us from moving forward as we wish. Indeed, we cannot go to the Mbinundita site at the moment. The school will, therefore, be rebuilt and completed as soon as the situation is favourable.

As you now know since December 2019, the foundation has committed to rebuilding the school in Mbinundita which fell apart after a storm. Here we are a few months later, the project is progressing well but it has also changed a lot since the first estimate.

Actually, the initial plan was to “simply” reconstruct the two classrooms, a very simple structure with local materials. However, after several hours of discussion with local communities and the education department, we came to the conclusion that the needs were greater than that.

So we came back with a second project; a beautiful school, resistant, practical and functional.  Above all, we have added a third classroom, which will allow 25 more children to attend school, as well as a so-called “multi-purpose” room. This space will serve as a homework room; given that they have no electricity in their villages and that night falls at 6 p.m., it is impossible for them to study after school. This space will also serve as an artistic centre and will be open to all the population of the surrounding villages to give courses, conferences or even develop new economic projects.

However, after many discussions with local communities and the education department, we came to the conclusion that the needs were greater. Before the storm, this school consisted of two classrooms (1st and 2nd year), perched on the top of a hill. This school also has no water, no electricity. These children don’t have enough to eat and now, no more school!

This new project also, like the previous one, provides clean toilets with a septic tank, a workroom for teachers, photovoltaic panels which will supply the school with electricity as well as access to drinking water which will be harvested thanks to on the roofs of the school and which will accessible to all.

Due to Covid-19 Outbreak, we started to rebuild in beginning of March 2020 and launching will probably be at the end of June 2020! We took this school under our wing in November 2019, touched by the poverty and the kindness of this extraordinary population.

About the 3rd classroom, which will allow 25 more children to attend school, as well as a so-called multi-purpose room. This space will serve as a homework room; given that they have no electricity in their villages and that night falls at 6 p.m., it is impossible for them to study after school. This space will also serve as an art centre and will be open to the entire population of the villages to give courses, conferences and develop new projects.

Like the 1st project, it includes clean toilets, a workroom for teachers, photovoltaic panels to supply the school with electricity, access to drinking water which will be harvested thanks to the roof of the school. The water will be accessible to the whole population who do not have access to it. The order and on-site delivery phase have already started. The building materials, the structure, the roof and photovoltaic panels will arrive in Sumba in March. In this sense, the first payment of CHF. 15’000.- was carried out on February 28th by the foundation.

The people have absolutely no money to rebuild it. This small school structure was built because these kids live far too far from the nearest primary school, located more than 8 kilometres away by foot. The school before was very simple with split bamboo walls, black sand floors with a tin roof and reeds.

Aim | The project, its evolution, the delay (Covid-19)

Aim

Today the foundation can count on a substantial amount, but this does not include the construction of elements to protect the building from the wind, nor the fact of lowering the level of the school by about 1m. These two factors are in our opinion (and that of our volunteer architects) essential in order to protect the new school from very strong wind.

Also as written above, we learned very recently that students who have grown up, a 3rd class/level 3), would be welcome. Otherwise, they will have to walk more than 8km (round trip 16km) to reach the school. So this is an opportunity to include this additional class.

How we will rebuild, the changes made

How

The school rebuilding will use the Superior House Instant Panel System (RUSPIN), it’s a prefabricated frame housing technology using a bolt connection system. This technology is suitable to be applied in almost all regions of Indonesia, especially in earthquake-prone areas.

  • Rebuild as explained above;
  • Provide 35 sets of school tables and chairs:
  • Acquire the books and textbooks for the K-13 elementary study programs and the teaching tools based on levels 1 and 2.

When establishing the first estimates in December 2019, the foundation and our architects calculated at the simplest. The time and also the experience made us think a lot, once there with our two architects (2 x 6 days in Sumba). We also exchanged with the children and the local community and redefined the needs relating to the concepts of Security and Access.

Why | Conclusion and security reasons

Why

We came to the conclusion that for security reasons, we had to do more in terms of construction. The school collapsed once and we don’t want it to happen again. Safety also includes hygiene (water and toilets) but also the impact that a few light bulbs could have on the future of these children, in terms of learning and access to knowledge.

By reconstructing a new school, the Foundation offers the continuity of educational activity in Mbinundita. Consequently, these children aged 8 to 10 years old can return to school. This village is located about 2.5 hours by car from the bigger city of Sumba. This population is far from any form of civilisation. It is essential for them that the school can be rebuilt as soon as possible!

  • Building a new school also means improving the quality of school facilities, the foundation will improve safety, health and learning behaviours;
  • Offer new possibilities for continuous learning programs, with the new facilities, the new school, and the new tools that will take place there;
  • Develop the enthusiasm of children to learn in joy and safety at school thanks to the new school;
  • Provide access to adequate sanitation facilities, water and electricity at school.
