No work, no money | How self-isolation due to COVID-19 pandemic punishes the poor in Indonesia! See our Action Map Here Kawan’s!
Hello Kawans, dear friends, Madam. Sir and dear families,
Public health experts have encouraged the public to isolate themselves for at least 14 days to contain the rapid spread of the coronavirus. Research has shown that self-isolation is very effective, especially when the majority of COVID-19 cases have no symptoms.
Echoing many health experts, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo suggested that people “stay, work and pray at home” for two weeks to prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease. Even though this preventive action has proven to be effective, it does not take into account the fact that many poor and low-income people cannot afford to isolate themselves.
Two weeks of self-isolation means that these people risk losing their only source of income.
As we all know, people working in informal and casual sectors like online drivers, grocery assistants and kitchen workers do not have the luxury of working from home as their work cannot be done at distance. They eat in the evening what they eat during the day. One of them said to us a few days ago: “I can’t afford to self-isolate. I need to go to work,” she said. “No work means no money, and no money means no food for my kids.”
In 2019, people working in the informal sector represented 57.2% of the Indonesian workforce or around 90 million people. Just under 30 million people live below the poverty line, about 9% of the Indonesian population.
The Kawan Baik of the Foundation has produced a map which details the places of action of our organisations which are working to help as many people as possible as part of this huge “Covid19 Community Care” action.
The government should allocate a budget to provide primary health services to the poor, but that remains too low, too little if that should happen! In the meantime, the foundation is helping u as best it can by offering simple services such as healthy food (without MSG), vegetables, fruits, rice, sugar, tempe, proteins, vitamin complexes, dairy products, milk powder for children, hygienic material for young girls and women, masks, disinfectant, soap, teaching and educational material for children.
Sometimes we add surprises and little extras depending on our budgets and what people offer us! And the most important things: Good mood, laughs, smiles, empathy, time and tons of love!
Thank you very much for your great support, we still need you as we will continue this operation for the next 6 months at least. So, do not hesitate to make a donation here Kawan’s!
